For the planet, for farmers and for you.
Welcome to Kokkoya Organics, where we believe that caring for the land, our community, and ourselves all go hand in hand. What started as a small patch of sandy ground in Yangon has grown into a lively space for growing food, learning, and connection. Our journey has always been about building good soil, nurturing good people, and creating good relationships from the ground up.
Our Beginning
Back in October 2017, we found our very first piece of land in North Dagon, a rough, rubbish-filled plot that needed a lot of love. With a “no-dig” approach and plenty of enthusiasm, we started layering cardboard, rice-husk charcoal, and compost to bring life back into the soil. Bit by bit, we raised our beds, planted our seeds, and watched the ground slowly come alive.
By December that same year, our first vegetable boxes; full of salad greens, radishes, eggplants, and okra were delivered to homes across Yangon. It was a small start, but it felt huge. Soon after, we began welcoming visitors for workshops on organic farming, permaculture, and home gardening. By early 2018, around 40 households were receiving fresh vegetables from our farm each week.
Growing Pains & Leaps
Then came the monsoon. The rains of June 2018 reminded us that growing year-round in Yangon takes both creativity and persistence. With floods, humidity, and mud everywhere, we had to rethink how we farmed. We built simple hoop houses, experimented with planting schedules, and learned how to work with the weather, not against it.
By the end of that year, our little team and our land had grown but so had our challenges. In early 2019, we had to say goodbye to both of our farm sites and start looking for a new, more permanent home. It wasn’t easy, but it pushed us to dream bigger.
That dream took shape in August 2019, when we found a new piece of land that felt right. We called it our “dream site.” We spent months preparing the soil, moving compost, and mapping out a plan for a farm that could grow food, host events, and bring people together.
Adapting Through Crisis
Just as we were settling into our new home, the world changed. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, our focus shifted overnight from building a farm to making sure people in Yangon could still access safe, fresh food. We became one of the city’s few essential services, delivering vegetables and groceries to families in lockdown.
It wasn’t an easy road. The years that followed brought not only a pandemic but also political upheaval in Myanmar, which deeply affected how we worked and lived. Yet through all the uncertainty, the farm kept going. We kept planting, kept harvesting, and kept showing up for our community.
Who We Are Today
Today, Kokkoya Organics is more than a farm- it’s a living, growing ecosystem. Our work is guided by regeneration: restoring the soil, strengthening our local food system, and nurturing the people who make it all possible.
We grow vegetables using organic, regenerative farming methods and invest in the health of our soil through composting, microbial brews, and continuous learning. Alongside our farm, we’ve built spaces for people to connect; a small café, bakery, shop, and classroom where food, stories, and ideas are shared every day.
We also host school visits, farm tours, and workshops for anyone curious about where their food comes from. Whether it’s children planting their first seed or adults rediscovering the joy of soil under their hands, we see every visitor as part of our growing community.
Why It Matters
Myanmar (and the world) needs food systems that care for both people and the planet. Industrial farming may feed the market, but it often depletes the soil and distances us from what truly sustains us. At Kokkoya, we want to show another way: that healthy soil grows healthy food, and healthy food builds healthy communities.
When we grow kale or lettuce, we’re not just producing crops, we’re rebuilding the living foundation beneath us. When we teach someone how to compost or plant their own herbs, we’re helping them reconnect with nature’s rhythms. When we deliver vegetables across Yangon, we’re building a bridge between farmers and families. Everything is connected.
Join Us on the Journey
Our story is still unfolding, and we’d love for you to be part of it. Whether you’re a home cook looking for fresh, seasonal vegetables, a teacher wanting to bring your students closer to the soil, or simply someone curious about how food and community intertwine- come visit us.
Walk through the beds, share a meal, join a workshop, or take home a box of our harvest. Every tomato, every bunch of greens, every smile on the farm is a small step toward a better food future- one we’re building together.
At Kokkoya Organics, we’re growing more than vegetables.
We’re growing good soil, good connections, and good people; for a kinder, healthier world.
